THE ORCHESTRA (FOR NOW) WAKE ROBIN
The Orchestra (For Now)’s debut single, ‘Wake Robin’, is an epic of ecstatic, dizzying proportions. Despite this being their first release, The Orchestra (For Now) have already generated considerable buzz with their live shows on The Windmill circuit and an appearance at Green Man Festival. With the experimental essence of underground counterpart Black Country, New Road, the seven-piece ensemble have been sitting on a treasure with ‘Wake Robin’. Introduced by sharp staccato piano strikes, the eight-minute number sets out to be a broad, theatrical piece through and through. Vocalist Eric Troyer sways between a glassy deliberation and an expressive, unrefined outpour in a monologue capturing an emptiness within day-to-day routine that plays in a winding, anxious thought pattern. Ponderous and avant-garde, the arrangement toils freely between different instrumental textures; slow builds in cello, violin, piano and guitar melodies which peek into the unknown, cower through moments of space, and conversely, give into raw outbursts. With such a massive first preview, excitement is piqued for how The Orchestra (For Now) will continue to develop. -Kayla Sandiford
